What is Sulfamic Acid?
Sulfamic acid is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula H₂NSO₃. It appears as a white, crystalline powder with no odor but with strong acidic properties. This substance has a broad range of industrial applications and is intended exclusively for professional use — in the chemical, textile, and paper industries, as well as in fire protection and analytical laboratories. It is primarily used as a reagent, a component of cleaning agents, and an intermediate in chemical synthesis. Sulfamic acid is not approved for consumer use, and its handling requires compliance with appropriate safety procedures.

Physicochemical Properties
Under standard conditions, sulfamic acid appears as a white, crystalline, odorless powder. It has a strongly acidic pH and is highly soluble in water, which makes it particularly convenient for use in solution form across various technological processes. Due to its hygroscopic nature, sulfamic acid readily absorbs moisture from the environment. Its melting point ranges between 200–205°C. When reacting with bases, it forms sulfamates, and under the right conditions, it can act either as a reducing agent or an oxidizing agent.
How Does Sulfamic Acid Work?
The action of sulfamic acid varies depending on its application, which is why it’s best understood through the lens of specific industries and use cases.
Sulfamic acid uses in detergents and industrial cleaning products
Sulfamic acid plays a key role in the production of household and industrial cleaning products, where it is primarily used as an active ingredient in specialized descaling and cleaning agents. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to remove mineral deposits without damaging or corroding the cleaned surfaces. You’ll find it in formulations designed for cleaning sanitary fixtures, heating systems, cooling equipment, and household appliances.

Sulfamic Acid – Applications in the Production of Lubricants, Adhesives, and More
In the chemical industry, sulfamic acid is used as an auxiliary raw material in the production of lubricants, adhesives, and various protective coatings. Thanks to its acidic properties and pH-controlling capabilities in technological processes, it helps stabilize and enhance the physicochemical properties of finished products. In adhesive formulations, it can act as a viscosity regulator or a reaction initiator, while in lubricant production, it contributes to improved durability and resistance to external factors.

Sulfamic Acid – Applications in the Chemical Industry and Laboratories
In research laboratories, sulfamic acid is a highly valued reagent, primarily used as a standard acid in titrimetric analyses, where its stability and purity ensure precise results. In industrial settings, it serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis, taking part in the production of many complex chemical compounds.

Other Applications of Sulfamic Acid
In the fire protection industry, sulfamic acid is used as a component in formulations for impregnating fabrics and construction materials. It is also applied in the production of technical textiles, insulation materials, and specialized protective coverings. In the paper and pulp industry, sulfamic acid is used both as an impregnating agent for paper and for its cleaning and stabilizing properties during pulp processing. These functions help control the quality and characteristics of the final product, improving the strength and durability of the paper.
In the petrochemical industry, sulfamic acid is used in metal cleaning and surface preparation processes, as well as in processing installations, where it effectively removes deposits and contaminants without damaging the treated surfaces. As a result, it is widely applied in the maintenance of refinery equipment, storage tanks, and pipelines.
