What is calcium nitrate and what are its properties?

Calcium Nitrate is a high-purity calcium and nitrogen fertilizer designed primarily for professional use in agriculture and commercial horticulture. A typical commercial product contains at least 15.5% total nitrogen and a minimum of 26% CaO. It is characterized by excellent water solubility, which facilitates the preparation of working solutions. Thanks to its stable physicochemical parameters and predictable nutrient content, it can be easily incorporated into both single- and multi-component fertilizer formulations. Granulated calcium nitrate performs well in technological processes, reducing the risk of caking and enabling the production of clear solutions, which is particularly important in fertigation and liquid fertilizer manufacturing.

In practice, calcium nitrate is used in greenhouses (tomato, cucumber, pepper, and strawberry cultivation) as well as in field systems with drip irrigation fertigation. Its readily available forms of nitrogen and calcium, low risk of clogging irrigation systems, and the ability to dose precisely make it well suited to intensive fertilization strategies.

The role of calcium (Ca) in plant nutrition

Calcium is a key structural macronutrient responsible for the stability of cell membranes and cell walls, as well as the overall quality of plant tissues. It influences fruit firmness, post-harvest shelf life, resistance to mechanical damage, and certain diseases. Calcium is poorly mobile within the plant, which is why its continuous availability in the root zone is crucial. Proper irrigation is also essential to ensure an adequate supply of calcium to developing fruits and young tissues.

The role of nitrogen (N) in nitrate form

Nitrogen is responsible for rapid and vigorous crop growth, yield quality, and protein synthesis. In nitrate form (NO₃⁻), it is directly available to plants and highly water-soluble, making it a key component of modern fertilizers. In calcium nitrate, the nitrate form predominates, allowing plants to respond quickly to their current nutritional needs and enabling precise nutrient balancing in fertigation solutions. The absence of transformation requirements in the soil (as is the case with some ammonium forms) makes its behavior in fertilization systems more predictable and helps limit unwanted pH fluctuations.

Calcium nitrate is a standard raw material in fertilizer production. It combines calcium and nitrogen, which allows it to be used both as a standalone product and as a component of multi-nutrient formulations. In fertigation blends, calcium nitrate serves as one of the key elements balancing Ca and N levels. It is often combined with other macro- and micronutrient sources such as potassium nitrate, magnesium sulfate, and chelated trace elements. It is a technologically flexible raw material, enabling the design of formulations tailored to specific crops, growth stages, and irrigation systems.

In practice, calcium nitrate is used as:

  • a primary source of nitrate nitrogen and calcium in greenhouse nutrient solutions (A/B systems),
  • a component of fertigation blends for berry crops (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry),
  • part of fertilization strategies in field crops with drip irrigation, where rapid delivery of readily available nitrogen is required.

Benefits for manufacturers and distributors

Calcium nitrate is an important raw material in the portfolio of fertilizer manufacturers and distributors specializing in fertigation. Consistent quality across batches, stable composition parameters, and good solubility facilitate production planning, quality control, and reduce technological risk. For fertilizer producers, this translates into a lower risk of precipitation, fewer complaints related to solution clarity, and greater predictability of blending processes.
